Today, someone asked me who my best friend is. I laughed to myself and said, “I’m my best friend.” A look of pity was plastered across my classmate’s face as she tried to find a smile and giggle politely. “Well if you don’t love you, then who will?” she quipped.
People laugh at me when I say that I genuinely enjoy quality time with me, but it’s completely true. Not that I don’t like spending time with other people; it’s just I love those moments of sheer uninhibited bliss, when I can let loose and sing or dance or do nothing at all. It’s a feeling that I wouldn’t trade for any emotion that any person outside of myself has given me.
I do have to say, when it comes to my particular brand of crazy, my family loves me in spite of my loopy nature. They’re my “anyway friends.” They know all of the good, bad and ugly about me and they love me anyway. I am humbled by that reassurance AND I encourage you to be jealous. :-P
Is not having a person outside of my bloodline to call my “best friend” such a bad thing? I enjoy me. I adore my family. What else could one possibly need?
I’m sure there’s the implication that I’m unlovable; that my lack of a best friend is somehow reflective of some type of disparity in my interpersonal communication skills. But that’s for you people to sort out. Lol. I’m happy. I’m enjoying me. I’m endeavoring to savor everything about life…
MY NAME IS NADIA AND YES, I AM MY OWN BEST FRIEND.
(suck on that.)

"What is a Friend? I’ll tell you. It is a person with whom you dare to be yourself. Your soul can go naked with him. He seems to ask you to put on nothing, only to be what you really are.
When you are with him, you do not have to be on your guard. You can say what you think, so long as it is genuinely you.
He understands those contradictions in your nature that cause others to misjudge you. With him you breathe freely – you can avow your little vanities and envies and absurdities, and in opening them up to him they are dissolved on the white ocean of his loyalty.
He understands. – You can weep with him, laugh with him, pray with him – through and underneath it all he sees, knows and loves you."
